Dingling Underground Palace

This palace was unveiled in 1956 and was the first of the 13 Ming imperial tombs to be formally opened to the public. The tombs can be found on the southern slopes of the Tianshou Mountains 48 kilometers to the northwest of Beijing. Dingling Underground Palace is historically important as the Emperor Wanli and his two empresses were buried at here at his death. Emperor Wanli reigned for 48 years which was the longest spell of all the Ming emperors. His tomb is absolutely the most extravagant and was built over a period of six years by about 30,000 workers. This tomb is 27 meters below the ground and covers an area of 1,195 sq meters. Dingling Underground Palace consists of five rooms connected by giant marble archways and floors paved by a highly polished stone known as gold bricks. The central hall has three marble regal thrones and hand-outs made of yellow glazed pottery. The rear hall is the most significant and remarkable, it contains three platforms used to support the coffins of the Emperor and his wives and was surrounded by 26 red lacquer chests filled with valuables made from gold, silver, jade and porcelain. In addition, sacred objects of jade and porcelain were placed around these chests. The objects include the emperor's crown and robes and the empresses’ robes, jewels and phoenix tiaras. Dingling Underground Palace is admired known for the quantity of cultural related notion. It can boast the presence of architectural treasures of great interest. Moreover, the rich heritage and sanctified being of the palace and surrounding locality refreshes the mind.
