Garden to Linger In

The Garden to Linger In or Liuyuan, built during the reign of Jiaqing of the Ming dynasty, covers an area of over 3 hectares in western Suzhou. Among the attractions are the spacious Nanmu Hall, the beautiful Mandarin Duck Hall and the Peak Above the Clouds, which is a huge rock.The garden is intricately designed, providing a changing scene at every turn and visitors enjoy the lakes, hills, rock formations and greenery. A 700 meter covered walkway connects all the major sites.This walkway has windows that provide interesting views of the garden and is inscribed with calligraphy from famous masters.
The central zone is composed of a sparkling pond surrounded by artificial hills on all four sides. Buildings take up the lion's share in the eastern zone, where doors are opened upon doors, and visitors are invariably attracted by exotic rocks and skillfully constructed artificial hills. The western zone is dominated by an idyllic artificial hill of giant proportions. Hills, water surfaces and flowers and trees are combined to form a garden of multiple depths. For its achievements in Chinese garden culture, the Garden to Linger In was known as Number One Famous Garden in Central Suzhou.
