Sera Monastery

Sera in Tibetan means Wild Rose Garden which is because opulent wild rose woods once grew around it. A legend said Tsong Khapa and his two disciples once preceded religious cultivation around. The center of Sera is the Main Assembly Hall, called Tsokchen, which is the grandest hall occupying a floor space of 1,000 square meters. This four storied hall has four chapels in which Manjushri, Tsong Khapa and Chenrezi are enshrined correspondingly. A vast Maitreya had been enshrined the hall during the reign of the Seventh Dalai Lama. Sera Me college is the one built first, but later it was destroyed by lightening strike and restored in 1761. Its Chanting hall is incredible as well. Sera Je college was first founded in 1435 and expanded by a Mongol king in seventeenth century. This building has five stories that cover a space of a thousand square meters. Sera keeps a collection of murals in perfect, unique condition. Its statues of Maitreya, Arhats and Bodhisattvas are very notable. Scriptures written in gold powder, tapestry portrait Jamchen Chojey, scroll paintings, thangkas are uniqueness of Sera. Sera Monastery is definitely one of the popular tourist attractions in China. It is worth paying a visit while touring the country. This place will leave a pleasing and unforgettable memory and justify the proud cultural tradition of China.
