Putuoshan
China, an East Asian country is one of the world’s oldest civilizations. It has a vast cultural history of more than five thousand years and an outstanding natural beauty. On the other hand, this country has remained a comparatively isolated and secluded one, and being a land of mystery, this country is not known to the western half of the world. Putuoshan is located in a small island in Zhoushan archipelago off the east coast of Zhejiang and can be reached by ferry from Ningbo. The island is a national park and covers an area of 13 square kilometers. Putuoshan is home to one of China’s four sacred Buddhist Mountains, Mount Putuo. The island offers a treasure trove of beautiful ancient temples, many of them dedicated to Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy who is said to have appeared on the island, stunning scenery and golden windswept beaches.
At the lookout point atop Mount Putuo the breathtaking view of hazy islands sprinkled on a chocolate milk sea is well worth the trip. Huijichan Si or Wisdom Benefit Temple on the summit of Mount Putuo is perhaps the most ornate of the temples. The courtyard of Bukenqu Guanyin Yuan provides a stunning view of the temple's gardens which lead you down to a pagoda perched on the headland, waves breaking ferociously on the rocks. Qianbusha Beach or thousand-step beach is an attraction on Putuoshan Island.
Putuoshan has been a Buddhist place of pilgrimage for over 1,000 years. The largest temple is temple, which was built during the Tang dynasty, who ruled china from 618 to 907 AD, Anno Domini, and houses a statue of Guanyin surrounded by her 32 different manifestations.
