Underground City
China, an East Asian country is one of the world’s oldest civilizations. It has a vast cultural history of more than five thousand years and an outstanding natural beauty. On the other hand, this country has remained a comparatively isolated and secluded one, and being a land of mystery, this country is not known to the western half of the world. However, China is rapidly developing and has grown in the phase of modernization, with an immense speed and is also welcoming the outer world to interact and do business with them. In the late 1960s, with the cold war at its climax and strained diplomatic relations between the United States, Soviet Union and China, the Chinese constructed huge civil defense systems, particularly in northern China. One of the leftovers from this period is the Underground City. In the present day the Underground City is much like its counterpart above the surface and there are warehouses, factories, hotels, shops, roller skating rinks, theaters and clinics. This subterranean city covers an area of 85 square kilometers and much of it was built by local citizens and volunteers under the leadership of the army. You can still visit some of the shelters that have not been converted into shops in the Qianmen area and can also view the telecommunications and ventilation systems. The Underground City is definitely one of the popular tourist attractions in China. It is worth paying a visit while touring the country. This place will leave a pleasing and unforgettable memory and justify the proud cultural tradition of China.
